Japanese Hardware Market Collapsing (Almost)
2/12/09
Japan - Hardware sales have all but collapsed. One year ago this week, total hardware sales in Japan were right around 250 thousand units. This year: 146 thousand, 42% less than 2008.Last year this week, the Wii sold 81k, this year, 20k. Last year, the PSP sold 76k, this year, 35k. These two systems alone account for the majority of the lower numbers, as the DS is on par (2008: 60k, 2009:62k), and the 360 actually doubled its sales from 2008 (2008: 4k, 2009: 8k).
It's hard to imagine when sales will recover, as hardware sales typically decline until April (going by the traditional sales-falloff after the New Year), and then hit a little spike around Golden Week...but sales have already dipped far past their yearly lows from 2008. So low, in fact, that they really don't have much further to go down. This could be a very, very hard year for manufacturers.

The Wii Hits Hard Times : Media Create Sales: 01/26 - 02/01 (Hardware)
2/5/09
The party turns sour for Wii. "Uh-oh!"Japan - The Wii, just four weeks after completing a year in which every 4th piece of hardware sold was a Wii (23.9% average weekly market share for 2008), is on the ropes with only 23 thousand units sold for the week.
While there are certainly many factors, among them being hardware sales being down across the board, the chief concern must be the declining weekly market share. This week the Wii only took 13.77% out of all hardware sold--down 20% from last year at this time.
Holding steady at 17k is the PS3. With a growing grin, the madame d'hardcore looks for several upcoming releases to fluff her skirts even further. All but leaving the dance is the 360 and PS2, murmuring something about "5k" and "we're big in the states!"
Of course, the star of the party is still the DS, who defies conventional recession logic and has sold yet another 70 thousand units.

The Wii had another dominating week with one hundred and twenty thousand sold, but slipped back to only 20% market share for total systems after a string of 22%-24% weeks.
Sony's PS3, while far behind the Wii, had a decent week for itself at sixty one thousand sold and took 10% of the market. The 360 and PS2, at twenty thousand and twelve and a half thousand respectively, brought in the rear.

PS3 Hardware Struggles Despite White Knight Sales (JPN)
1/7/09
(Media Create Hardware: 12/22 - 12/28)
Japan - Sadly, the story remains the same: the PS3 can't crack fifty thousand despite a two hundred thousand-selling title in WKC. The 360, thought earlier this year by many a 360-enthusiast to be "making a real comeback in Japan," weighs in this week with a thud at thirteen thousand.
While Sony's sad PS3 story spirals downward, Nintendo's jubilant march upwards continues this week, with combined DS sales above two hundred and forty thousand. The Wii had a great week too, with one hundred and thirty five thousand consoles sold, almost three times what the PS3 sold.
The redemption for Sony this week comes from the feisty PSP, who refuses to go down against the onslaught of the DS. The PSP hit almost one hundred and twenty thousand and continues to churn out the hits on software.

Japan: Nintendo Takes More than 59% of Total Market Share for 7th Week In A Row
12/18/08
Japan: The latest hardware data has been released and Nintendo has taken 59% total market share or better for the seventh week in a row. DSi (173k) and DSL (31k) combine to sell two hundred thousand, and the Wii (91.6k) vaulted to almost one hundred thousand units.
Sony's three systems all had modest gains from the previous week, with the PSP hitting 71.k and the PS3 hitting 33.7k, and the not-yet-forgotten PS2 still selling more than 6k.
The 360 brings in the rear for this-gen hardware at 11.8k.
