In January, sales of the Playstation 3 dropped approximately 25 percent year-on-year, while sales of the Playstation Portable also dropped by the same percentage. Sales of the long-running Playstation 2 fell 62 percent, from 264,000 units to 101,200.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 grew approximately 25 percent in January, year-on year, and the Wii has grown exponentially in the same period, with an approximately 147 percent increase in sales, from 274,000 units to 676,000.
As hardware sales have all but collapsed in Japan, Sony is feeling the brunt of the pain. Despite the publisher’s projected losses of nearly $3 billion, they have claimed that their global layoffs will not affect their games division.
