MC 2008-12-08 and Famitsu 2008-12-01: Things of Note

12/21/08

Based on the latest Famitsu hardware numbers...
PSP comparisons: After 209 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 156.6 weeks (February 27, 2003), where DS was at 92.7 weeks (September 8, 2006), and where GBA was at 142.2 weeks (December 8, 2003).

X360 comparisons: After 157 weeks, X360 is where GCN was at 15.2 weeks (December 25, 2001), where PS3 was at 20.9 weeks (April 1, 2007), and where Wii was at 4.2 weeks (December 25, 2006).

PS3 comparisons: After 109 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 25.0 weeks (August 20, 2000), where PSP was at 55.0 weeks (December 25, 2005), where GCN was at 113.0 weeks (November 9, 2003), and where Wii was at 26.8 weeks (June 1, 2007).

Wii comparisons: After 106 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 91.4 weeks (December 18, 2002), where DS was at 71.9 weeks (April 15, 2006), where PS2 was at 102.5 weeks (February 13, 2002), and where PSP was at 157.4 weeks (December 12, 2007).

DSi comparisons: After 6 weeks, DSi is where GBASP was at 7.6 weeks (April 3, 2003), where DSL was at 5.7 weeks (April 7, 2006), and has passed GBM's lifetime total.

Based on the latest Media Create hardware numbers...
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 74.1 / 25.9 bring total shares to 69.1 / 30.9. This is actually kinda notable, because as far as the view of rounding to tenths of percents go, this is the first time overall marketshare has visibly moved in DS's direction since August 2007. If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 190.0 weeks (August 5, 2012).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 25.9 / 74.1 bring total shares to 24.1 / 75.9. If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 147.0 weeks (October 9, 2011).

PSP vs Wii: At this week's rates, Wii catches PSP in 189.9 weeks (August 5, 2012). If PSP stopped selling and Wii continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 41.7 weeks (October 2, 2009).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 26.9 / 73.1 bring total shares to 26.0 / 74.0. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 138.8 weeks (August 13, 2011).

Week over week it seems like the better you were doing last week, the greater your increase this week.

Famitsu Software Stuff
Animal Crossing City Folk (3281) now more noticeably falls behind Wild World (95) in its third week, but it's still way ahead of either GCN release.

PSP's second Musou Orochi isn't quite doing as well as the first released this February.

Nor does Saints Row 2 quite match the first week performance of its predecessor, released last July.

We don't know anything about the first Patapon's sales beyond its total after two weeks (which made the 2007 Top 500), but its sequel's two weeks are better.

Another sequel doing better than its predecessors is PSP's Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3. This one is actually significantly higher, after only two weeks beating the totals we have for the previous games.

Didn't notice when the Wii started slipping behind the PS2. How long ago did this happen?

The PS3 comparisons are stunning. The PS2 sold as much in its first 25 weeks as PS3 has sold in 2 full years?

*wow*

It fell behind in Wii's 100th week (6 weeks back). I thought the holiday bump would push it way back in the lead, but it being smaller than expected and PS2's 2002 being a strong time for the console, it may not be quite that easy.
