Poll III: Where Is NSMB2 Headed?

8/26/08

Super Mario Bros. Release History:

NES:

Super Mario Bros. - 1985
Super Mario Bros. 2 - 1986
Super Mario Bros. 3 - 1988

Gameboy:
Super Mario Land - 1989
Super Mario Land 2 - 1992

SNES:
Super Mario Bros. 4 (SMW) - 1990

N64:
Super Mario 64 - 1996

GC:
Super Mario Sunshine - 2002

DS:
New Super Mario Bros. - 2006

Wii:
Super Mario Galaxy - 2007

Opinion/Analysis:
The above shows the proximity of main-line flagship Mario titles released per system and the years in which they were released. Notably, the last time a direct sequel for a flagship Mario game appeared on the same system as its predecessor was NINETEEN HUNDRED AND NINETY-TWO. That's 16 years, fellas.

Clearly, NSMB is the best selling Mario title since the original (please refer to the amazing chart produced and maintained by Stumpokapow), so those that would argue that NSMB2 is bound for the DS would have a convincing argument.

So what do you think? Will Nintendo follow the last decade and a half of precedent or will they take advantage of the enormous install base of the DS? Will they actually make a direct sequel, or will they continue with their history of reinventing Mario for their next machine?

Investor Relations: EA Reports First Quarter Fiscal Year 2009 Results

7/29/08

Read the whole (exhausting) release HERE. $95 millon loss? YOU BET! Changes coming? A renewed focus and over 40 games in development on worldwide hardware leaders Wii and DS says yes. Read the Joystiq take on the EA Conference Call HERE.

Notice:
1. Revenue on the 360 dropping each quarter consecutively, including the holiday season: this has to be a huge concern for EA as they seem to have bet on them early, as they already admitted earlier this week.

2. PS2 driving 300 million in revenue in FY08Q3, nearly 2 years into the next generation: this is further evidence that backing the worldwide market leader (independent of graphical quality/hardware ability) drives revenue growth for years after the peak sales ability of said system has passed.

3. PSP and PS3 both doing the best of consoles and handhelds for EA in FY09Q1 is an interesting counterpoint to their renewed commitment to focus on market leaders DS and Wii.

Chart Notes:
1. Scale kept the same for comparative purposes.
2. Source = EA press release/investor relations.
