Using the latest Media Create numbers from the week of 2008-07-21...
Since this is the first time I'm posting this at LotusCharts: The big advantage of Media Create hardware numbers is that the sales for a particular week are announced a week before their Famitsu counterpart.
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 45.8 / 54.2, bringing total shares to 69.7 / 30.3. At this week's rates PSP catches up to DS in 1,240.1 weeks (May 3, 2032). If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 192.7 weeks (April 7, 2012).
PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 20.7 / 79.3, bringing total shares to 25.7 / 74.3. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up to Wii in 396.7 weeks (March 5, 2016).
Using the latest Famitsu numbers from the week of 2008-07-14...
Since this is the first time I'm posting this at LotusCharts: The big advantage of Famitsu numbers is that they've been doing this longer, and it's easy to find the numbers going years further back. This makes it necessary for working with older systems, and for consistency it's best to compare past Famitsu to modern Famitsu rather than mixing trackers.
PSP comparisons: After 190 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 147.4 weeks (December 24, 2001), where DS was at 87.3 weeks (August 1, 2006), and where GBA was at 124.0 weeks (August 3, 2003).
PS3 comparisons: After 89 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 20.1 weeks (July 16, 2000), where PSP was at 52.5 weeks (December 7, 2005), where GCN was at 95.7 weeks (July 10, 2003), and where Wii was at 22.3 weeks (April 30, 2007).
Wii comparisons: After 86 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 87.4 weeks (November 19, 2002), where DS was at 68.7 weeks (March 23, 2006), where PS2 was at 96.3 weeks (January 1, 2002), and where PSP was at 148.6 weeks (October 10, 2007).
Notes on Famitsu software: A rare occurrence this week: There are two 5+ million sellers in the top 30: New Super Mario Bros. and Pokémon Diamond/Pearl. I only know of this occurring twice before, and with the same two games: the weeks of 2008-01-07 and 2008-06-30. These games obviously have proven legs; perhaps we'll see them do this a few more times.
There are also seven games with totals of 2+ million on the list. I know of no time where there have been eight, but this is the fifth time seven has happened: all this year. The weeks of 2008-01-07, 2008-05-05, 2008-06-16, 2008-06-30, and this week.
Famitsu software pie. Famitsu gives a pie chart showing how total games sales are spread among systems.
DS: 64.8%
PSP: 15.2
Wii: 8.3
PS2: 5.6
PS3: 5.1
X360: 0.7
Other: 0.3
Dragon Quest V's release gives DS an abnormally large amount, causing most other systems to get abnormally small percentages. PSP with its new Gundam game ranked #2 for the week is an exception. The last time any system took a share greater than 64.8% was over a year ago. The week of 2007-06-18 DS took 70.2%. That time it wasn't so much on the strength of one giant game as it was that DS software held spots #1-3 and there weren't any major new releases for other platforms.
